Absztrakt

Abraham Maslow szükségletpiramisa a legismertebb pszichológiai elméletek egyike.

 Abstract

Abraham Maslow’s theory on hierarchy of needs is one of the most popular theses in psychology. According to Maslow, eating is an essential demand of biological existence. As long as hunger is unsatisfied, the organism is unable to deal with higher human needs (e.g. safety needs, belongingness, esteem needs, self-actualization, and transcendental needs). Following the satisfaction of hunger, these motivators are getting stronger. All the activities of civilization are based on the satisfaction of physiological needs (mainly eating). Maslow’s mistake is that eating is not only determined by physiological factors. People of the consumer society hardly feel hunger in the abundance of food, yet, they adhere to the need of alimentation, they eat too much and become overweight. Eating can provide the feeling of safety, capability of expressing love. Gastronomic interest gives many people a sense of aesthetic and cognitive power. Refusing food provides the experience of self-actualization for an anorexic person and it can even be accompanied by religious, spiritual, transcendental experiences as well. Thus hunger can be activated in the form of all the higher human needs. Marketing communication uses this phenomenon to motivate greater consumption.
